This video from The China Digital Conference neatly explains the depth and breadth of China's vibrant Internet. More controlled it may be than its Western counterpart, but the sheer volume of online activity is very impressive.

A Much Admired Feat Of Engineering!
The creative potential of mankind is sometimes wondrous to behold.
This advertising development in Puerto Rica by fast food chain Burger King adds a new dimension to the concept of "wearable tech".
By this I mean that there is a distinct possibility that every 'Tech' on the planet will want one of these hands-free burger munchers.
Or, if you are more of an outdoors person, you can always trim the hedge or walk the dog wearing one. No chance of the sauce oozing on to the side-walk with this little beauty.
Creativity-Online reports that it was DLC/Ogilvy & Mather who dreamed up the "Hands Free Whopper." "50 of these were handed out to members of the fast feeder's loyalty program".

What's Hanging On The Vine?
Well not very much really. As most people know Twitter recently launched its video clip service - Vine. To quote their blog "a new mobile service that lets you create and share beautiful, short looping videos. With Vine, capturing life in motion is fun and easy"
So what are people posting? If you have a look at Vinepeek you can see the clips on their unmoderated service.
Lot's of 'foodie' clips, warm cuddly pets, a guy who got 'in the money' and the occasional flash of the unsavoury. it didn't take long for pornographers to realise the potential of Vine as Mashable reports. So what's hanging on the vine might be not what you expect.
At least with Vine you now have the choice of sharing your communication on Twitter using 140 characters or with a six-second GIF-like looping video. Available in Apples App store but no Android version that I could find?

When A + is Not A Plus
It would seem that receiving a +1 on Google Plus is no great benefit in raising your profile in Google's search rankings.
As a social metric the number of +1's you receive may be heart warming but doesn't mean that you will be discovered online any better.
Matt Cutts, the head of Google Web Spam team confirmed in a ‘Power Searching With Google Hangout on Air #2’ that this was the case. This is not to say that +1's won't become more important in the future but right at the moment Google is more interested in 'authorship'.
"In the short term, we’re still going to have to study and see how good the signal is, so right now, there’s not really a direct effect where if you have a lot of +1s, you’ll rank higher.
But there are things like, we have an authorship proposal, where you can use nice standards to markup your webpage, and you’ll actually see a picture of the author right there, and it turns out that if you see a picture of the author, sometimes you’ll have higher click through, and people will say, ‘oh, that looks like a trusted resource.’ So there are ways that you can participate and sort of get ready for the longer term trend of getting to know not just that something was said, but who said it and how reputable they were."
So perhaps the main lesson to be learnt is that you need to have Google Authorship enabled on your site. Your online visibility will improve with the number of results your achieve as an author, within the results pages.

Vietnam Thinks Local & Excels In Online Video Use
A recent survey from comScore revealed some interesting data about the popularity and growth of online video in the East Asia region.
In June of this year 83.1 percent of the world’s online population watched online video from a home or work computer. That represents 1.2 billion people worldwide age 15 and older undertaking this activity.
In the same month 197.5 billion videos were viewed online globally. The average viewer watched 159.4 videos in June of 2012 and it is a particularly popular past time in Asia.
A significant factor in this development has been increased broadband access and content availability which has resulted in higher online video viewing activity.
It should be noted though that these results only present part of the picture, as they relate to video watching using a PC and do not include other platforms or situations such as viewing a video in an Internet cafe, on a mobile phone or tablet. Given the impact of mobile not having this data included is a flaw. Where too are South Korean and Thailand both of which are heavy users of broadband & mobile technologies?

The key findings from the survey were:
- Vietnam has the strongest reach of online video viewers in the Asia-Pacific region
- Vietnam has the highest video viewing penetration (89.8 percent ) and Indonesia had the lowest (66.9 percent ).
- Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand all exceeded the global average for online video penetration
- China was the leader when it came to the largest online video market by audience size. It hads 266.2 million unique viewers (79.4 percent reach). Next was Japan with 61.5 million viewers (83.7 percent reach) followed by India with 44.6 million viewers (73.1 percent reach).
- When it came to online video engagement, the average Japanese viewer watched 242.5 videos per month, Hong Kong viewers watched 180.7 videos, Singapore 158.1 videos and Australia 151.4.
- Google sites are the top video destination in Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam thanks to its ownership of YouTube
- Facebook.com ranked as the second largest video viewing destination in the Philippines and the third ranked destination in Indonesia and Taiwan
- VEVO and Viacom Digital were in the top five video viewing destinations in both Indonesia and the Philippines
- Yahoo! Sites are big in Taiwan, ranking second. Tudou Sites come in 4th ranked and Youku Inc.5th.
- Local providers always excel in Vietnam so it is no surprise that VnExpress, Vega Corporation (Clip.vn) and Tuoi Tre Online securing places were all in the top five in the rankings.

Two From Twitter
Twitter continues to take on the power of Facebook with two further enhancements. There is now a new version of Twitter search which delivers photographic images and video in the results page.
If you have the latest version of Firefox you can type a #hashtag or @username into the browser address bar immediately opena search results page (try #travel) or someone's profile page (like @digiconsultant).
The second refinement is the Follow Button; a simple piece of code to drop into your web site or blog at any location you wish. To configure a follow button for your site go here and follow the easy directions.
I have added one to this article (see below) and as a matter of good social media practice I would recommend that you add this button to every article you publish.
Facebook's social plugins should also be included where appropriate.

Good Advice On Making Online Videos
Patrick Starzan, the Vice President of Marketing of the popular comedy website Funny or Die, in an interview with WebProNews details some of the mistakes that people are making with video on the Web.
Visible Measures research found that 19.4 percent of online viewers abandon a video within the first 10 seconds and 44.1 percent of viewers abandon online video within the first 60 seconds. Music videos were one of the worst categories as were those which were slow to get to their punch line.
The company researched 40 million videos in more than seven billion viewings to reach there conclusion.
The lesson to be learnt here is that no video should go unless until it is truly professional in content and production.
If you content is not engaging from the outset then you will not have a hope of capturing repeat visitation.

Will This Online Video Company Survive?
Finding a market niche in the online world is tough going but Howcast seems to be surviving. Forming alliances with the big boys such as Yahoo!, AOL, Hulu and Microsoft's MSN has certainly helped.
Howcast streams over 25 million videos a month and was founded by Jason Liebman (pictured) a former Googler.
Approaching two million downloads across iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry phones, Howcast claims to be "the #1 mobile app for instructional content - wherever you are".
The are some offbeat "how to" topics waiting to be discovered and shared. These include:
How To Survive a Bear Attack on Howcast
Its "How to Kiss With Passion" has so far proved its most popular, with 20 million views on YouTube.
300 videos a month are being produced by the company but they are aiming for 10,000 a month. That's a lot of instructional video to choose from.
My favourite title to date is "How to Stop Eating Crap to Stop Feeling Like Crap", which I would have thought was self explanatory

Two Billion YouTube Videos Viewed Daily
YouTube celebrates its fifth year with a record 2 billion video views per day; yes that's 'per day' not 'per month'.
As they are at pains to point out "that’s nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major U.S. television networks combined."
Interestingly the site is ranked second in Saudi Arabia and fourth in the USA for traffic and according to Alexa, the greatest amount of viewing takes place from school.

The other interesting fact about YouTube is its symbiotic relationship with Facebook which delivers 10% of its unique visitors.
The next step in the evolution of YouTube will be to get into livestreaming with platforms such as Livestream already showing the way.
I am a great fan of Livestream and recommend that people sign up for a free account to get the feel of its studio and channel capabilties. The potential is for a far more professional media offering than an embedded YouTube video.
It is however worth while checking out YouTube's Channel 4
