The Most Appalling Spying Machine Ever Invented

Seal of the Office of the Director of National...Image via Wikipedia
During an interview with a Russian news site, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange describes Facebook as:

"the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented. Here we have the world's most comprehensive database about people, their relationships, their names, their addresses, their locations and the communications with each other, their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all accessible to U.S. intelligence."

Facebook, Google, Yahoo – all these major US organizations have built-in interfaces for US intelligence. It’s not a matter of serving a subpoena. They have an interface that they have developed for US intelligence to use.

Now, is it the case that Facebook is actually run by US intelligence? No, it’s not like that. It’s simply that US intelligence is able to bring to bear legal and political pressure on them. And it’s costly for them to hand out records one by one, so they have automated the process. Everyone should understand that when they add their friends to Facebook, they are doing free work for United States intelligence agencies in building this database for them
"

It is a little surprising that this outburst is so vitriolic, given that WikLeaks itself has a Facebook Page and Facebook refused to shut them down, even though other US-based companies such as PayPal severed their connections with WikiLeaks.

Not surprisingly Facebook refutes Assange's claims and a company spokesman, in a written statement to CNet, is on record as saying that they only do what's legal and nothing more. Neither have they automated the process of data retrieval according to their rebuttal.

"We don't respond to pressure, we respond to compulsory legal process. There has never been a time we have been pressured to turn over data [and] we fight every time we believe the legal process is insufficient. The legal standards for compelling a company to turn over data are determined by the laws of the country, and we respect that standard."

This is not to say that there aren't companies who haven't built agency intefaces to cater for government requests for information. A case in point is the telco Spint, whose GPS data has reportedly been used more than 8 million times by the local constabulary.

Clearly there are some major privacy issues about the release of such data without obtaining the owner's prior permission.

Facebook have an online form for enforcement, law offices and government agencies to use when requesting information.

So is there a grain of truth in what Assange is suggesting? We shall never know if intelligence agencies are able to tap into private data but it is a safe bet that they can and do.

For those that are really concerned by this then the answer is simple, do not engage in social media and if your do, adjust your privacy settings to exclude anything you don't wish to share.

Project Titan - Elder Gods Thrust Aside?

Email-me-buttonIn Greek Mythology, the Titans were a race of powerful deities that ruled during the legendary Golden Age.

These Elder Gods was eventually overthrown by a race of younger gods, the Olympians and it could well be that we are about to see a younger upstart replace an establish "older god"?

Techcrunch is reporting that Facebook's fully-fledged, web-based email client (unofficially referred to internally as its “Gmail killer”) will be announced this Monday during Facebook’s special event, alongside personal @facebook.com email addresses for users.

With more than 500 million members the inroduction of a personal email service will lay down a powerful challenge to  Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail.

Hotmail is the current market leader with 361.7 million users as of September. Next is Yahoo! with 273.1 million users and Gmail has 193.3 million (source Comscore).

Facebook and Google have been having an ongoing spat over data sharing and this extends to Silicon Valley engineering talent.

According to media reports:

Google last week blocked Facebook from importing Gmail contact information over the Palo Alto, California-based social network's refusal to reciprocate and share data about its users.

And The Wall Street Journal reported that Internet search king Google, in a bid to stem defections to rival technology firms such as Facebook, has given all of its 23,000 employees a 10 percent pay hike.

Google has every reason to feel insecure over the Titan project as Facebook will hit the email ground running, thanks to the size of its membership, which in the classical sense is truly titanic.

Will This Online Video Company Survive?

Image representing Jason Liebman as depicted i...
Finding a market niche in the online world is tough going but Howcast seems to be surviving.  Forming alliances with the big boys such as Yahoo!, AOL, Hulu and Microsoft's MSN has certainly helped.

Howcast streams over 25 million videos a month and was founded by Jason Liebman (pictured) a former Googler.

Approaching two million downloads across iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry phones, Howcast claims to be "the #1 mobile app for instructional content - wherever you are".

The are some offbeat "how to" topics waiting to be discovered and shared. These include:
  • How To Survive a Bear Attack
  • How To Pick a Karaoke Song If You Can’t Sing
  • How To Stop Blushing ( presumably after the bear attack?) and
  • How to Walk in High Heels

The Next Bing Thing

Image representing Bing as depicted in CrunchBase
Traditionalists amongst us tend to stick with Google search and I am one of these folks.  However Bing is most definitely on the up;  it already powers Facebook's search and will shortly do the same for Yahoo search.

Secondly Bing has had a spring renewal of interface design which is a lot more appealing and easier to navigate with the Quick Tabs feature.

Brian MacDonald, the Corporate Vice President of Bing  indicated that they had decided to invest in the entertainment area, based on the findings of user research.

Music, gaming TV and movies have extensive offerings and a new portal for those who want to go direct.  There are currently  5 million free plays in the music offering.

The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization (Theory in Practice)Yusuf Mehdi, Bing's Senior Vice President explains: "As the content on the web has exploded, it has become difficult to navigate and find what you are looking for. In the field of entertainment, 76 percent of people use search to help find and navigate their entertainment options online, but only 10 percent say they have a trusted place to go.

So we see a great opportunity to help customers make important entertainment decisions -- from deciding what movie to buy or see, which TV shows to watch online or on your TV, what music to listen to, how to find and safely play your favorite casual games – Bing is making a first step today to help make entertainment on the web easy and fun, so you spend less time searching for entertainment and more time doing the stuff you love."

The business application of Bing is of greater interest and they have beefed up  investment profiling.  The much vaunted finance portal which is meant to be at this URL http://www.bing.com/finance is currently redirecting to the search engine front page which suggests that all is not well?

Bing General Manager Derrick Connell discusses the latest changes made to Bing's design and experience in this video.

I gave Bing  a try when it was first launched and stopped using it shortly after.  On the strength of these improvements I am willing to give it a second chance.
